Golf, as we know it today, was born somewhere in the east coast of Scotland in the early fifteenth century. Some historians believe that golf was originated in the Netherlands (the Dutch word Kolfmeans "stick"), but the Romans had a game in which they used a curved stick and a ball made of feathers, which may have been the original source the game.
The first reference to golf in the historictown of St. Andrews dates from 1552.

In the eighteenth century established the first golf associations, as the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers (1744), the Society of St. Andrews Golfers(1754), who in 1834 took its current name, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St . Andrews by grant of King William and the Royal Blackheath (1766), near London, where it was agreed to set a date for theintroduction of golf in England in 1608.

The forerunner of the British Open, the first major, was played for the first time in 1860 and was won by Willie Park. The legend arose when Father TomMorris won the event in 1862, 1864 and 1867. But his son, Young Tom Morris, was the first great champion to get the tournament four consecutive times since 1869. Other illustrious winners were JH Taylorand Harry Vardon in 1894 in 1896. Along with James Braid, these three men were known as the Great Triumvirate.

In Spain, the first golf club was established in Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) in 1891.In 1921, the R & A set a limit on the size and weight of the golf ball that was a separation between the game in Europe and America (regulated by the USGA). Most differences were resolved in 1951 whenboth associations agreed common rules. However, the differences in the ball were not regulated until 1988. Currently the global golf is regulated jointly by the R & A and USGA. Every four years theamendments agreed to be published in the Official Rules of Golf.
