Understanding Another Person

The Reading gives a knowledgeable insight about the methodology in understanding other people which influence our lives in some manner. We all spent most of our timeeveryday with our peers and colleagues , thus develop a relationship with them . The article talks about understanding these individuals so as to enhance the quality and effectiveness of thisrelationship. This would help in anticipating the needs , wants and desires of the people in order to estimate or comprehend their behaviour. The note gives two techniques of doing the above , these are :-
1.To judge by one’s own observation.
2. To judge by other’s observation.
The idea behind the former is that understanding others by observing them , knowing them and interpreting them by our ownperceptions . The notion of self-concept also comes into picture when a person tries to imply one’s own self-concept to other people and understand the reasoning behind their behaviour. The latter pointmentions the understanding via putting yourself in other’s shoes. This concept which psychologists call “phenomenological” view of behaviour is been described in the note. The concept talks aboutlooking at the world from the frame of reference of another individual .This allows us to get to know what that individual thinks about himself/herself .This is necessary to understand others’ perceptions,assumptions and feelings.
The note further talks about the assumptions which include all beliefs , values and attitudes , perception ie what person hears, sees or as perceives, finally feeling whichis the emotional side of the person.
The areas that I agree with the author include the quote or paradox “You can’t understand other people until you understand yourself ; but you can’t understandyourself , until you understand others “.
