Used to is used for repeated actions in the past
Example:
When I was at high school, I used to play basketball (but I don´t play any more)
David used to go out with agirl called Heidi (but now he´s married to Susan)
In history we use “used to” when we want to know about people in other time. Or we want to talk/write about inventions that change the way we used to dothings.
Example:
In old days, people used to travel to Europe by ship, they didn´t have airplane.
My grandparent’s didn´t have mobile phone. They had to talk in person
