The Soviet Union (Russian: Советский Союз tr.: Sovietsky Soyuz), officially called the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR in Russian: Союз Советских Социалистических Республикtr.: Soyuz Sovétskij Sotsialistícheskij Respublik; pronunciation (? • i) short СССР , SSSR) 5 was a constitutionally socialist federal state that existed in Eurasia from 1922 to 1991. The name usedinformally among its residents was the Union (Soyuz).
