The government of the U.S.
Because of its size, wide powers and capabilities, the United States is considered the world’s most powerful federal system. But is it only a federal government? How isit structured? Does it have one only Constitution? Which one is the dominating party?
The type of government held by the U.S. is a federal constitutional republic and a representative democracy. This means that the power is shared by the national and the state governments, and that people command through their representatives to the Congress and Senate.
Consequently there is one nationalConstitution but each state has its own different, more elaborate constitution too. This means that those matters that are not appointed by the national government are fixed by each state, making somemore specific laws vary from one state to another. A state constitution often deals with interstate compacts and reserved powers. The national constitution however answers to external affairs, treaties, tariffs, etc.
The framers of the Constitution wanted to ensure that centralization does not happen again, so they built this federal government as a strong balanced system consisting of threebranches. First, the legislative branch, meaning the bicameral Congress composed of the Senate and the House of representatives. The second branch is the Executive, which has the president, vice presidentand cabinet members. The third branch is the judicial, consisting of the Supreme Court and the lower federal courts. This distribution, they thought, was necessary to avoid the kind of tyranny theyexperienced during the Colonial period.
As for political parties, the dominating ones in the US are currently the Republicans and the Democrats. The Republicans are known for being moreconservative, whereas the Democrats are more liberal. At this time, the democrats have the most power in government, since the current president and most of the congressmen belong to this party.
