USA and the Hegemonic Power

Introduction
It has long been common for critics of the foreign policy of the United States to describe the United States as an "imperialist" power. Over thepast two years, however, the term has come to be more favorable, particularly by the British historian Niall Ferguson. The positive side, the United States must act more as an imperial power has beenaccompanied by a reassessment of the early powers such as Britain and Rome. Despite the growing attention to imperialism as the view of Ferguson, the United States is more accurately described ashegemony, rather than an imperial power. The United States does not seek to extend their territory, or even, in general, to exercise direct control over the governments of other countries. In addition,particularly under the Bush Administration, the United States has tried to be more than "first among equals." Management believes that, on matters of global importance, the United States has the rightdetermine the outcome, with the support of allies, if possible, but unilaterally if necessary. This is the point of view of hegemony rather than an imperial power.1
