Chapter 1
Introduction
Many PhD students in the sciences are being encouraged toproduce their PhD A thesis in L TEX, particularly if their work involves a lot of mathematics. This document is intended as a brief guide on how to structure your document, and how A to define new page styles, chapter headings and so on. If you have never used L TEX A before, I would recommend that you first read L TEX for Complete Novices [5], as A this document assumes you have a basic knowledge of LTEX. Throughout this document, source code is illustrated in the form: This is an \textbf{example}. The corresponding output is illustrated as follows: This is an example. Command definitions are shown in a typewriter font in the form: \documentclass[options]{class file}

Chapter 2
Getting Started
If you have been told to use a particular class file, use that one, otherwise Iwould recommend that you use the report class file. Before you start your document, consider first what kind of structure it should have. Unless you have been told otherwise, I would recommend that you start out with a skeletal document that looks something like the following: \documentclass[a4paper]{report} \begin{document} \title{A Sample PhD Thesis} \author{A. N. Other} \date{July 2004} \maketitle\pagenumbering{roman} \tableofcontents \listoffigures \listoftables \chapter*{Acknowledgements} \begin{abstract} \end{abstract} \pagenumbering{arabic} \chapter{Introduction} \label{ch:intro} \chapter{Technical Introduction} \label{ch:techintro} \chapter{Method} \label{ch:method} \chapter{Results} \label{ch:results}
