1. Preface At the entrance to a new millennium we findourselves in a time when resources become more and more scarce and simultaneously the need to provide living, housing and energy for more and more humans is urging the responsible ones in society and science to search for alternative and - even more important - regrowing materials. Considering the subject as an integral matter, another aspect is the use of materials available in the respective regionto avoid energyand cost intensive transport. Of course different kinds of woods are of interest, but also hemp, reeds and maybe most important of all the bamboo must be considered as raw materials for fuels, buildings, constructions and other artifacts. Many of the materials in question have been used traditionally by local populations throughout the world, but with the modern way of live,technical progress and also with internationalism the traded knowledge nowadays often is about to disappear or even already has disappeared. Regrettably, in a lot of places people now prefer to apply modern techniques they are not trained for and that are not appropriate for use in humid climates or seismic regions at a much higher cost than the traditional way. Our future task will be not only topreserve the knowledge of cultivating and working these plants but also in improving techniques and inventing new ones in order to match the necessities of modern live. not the least factor in this enterprise is creating an ecological conscience and trying to achieve closed circles of energy. The research for sustainable technologies and working methods affords also a more open-minded way of thinking -the ability to make unusual conclusions, to always think one step ahead and to put things together in a complete new way using fantasy and wit will be the main virtue in this field. And which material can inspire our thoughts more than the bamboo, used by men on nearly every continent for thousands of years in a greater diversity than probably any other material on earth?
