Since the beginning of time people have been questioning their selves about dreams and reality. There’s always been anecessity to differentiate one from another; however, sometimes it’s quite difficult to do so. Not knowing this difference can led people to lose their mind. They say illusion never changes into somethingreal…or does it?

Since dreams are quite a controversial subject, there have been many books and films about it, and Vanilla Sky is not the exception. Vanilla Sky tells the story about a famouspublisher, David Aames, whose life changes completely after a car crash that gets him into a comma for 3 weeks. When he finally wakes up, his life seems to have changed but he doesn’t realize untillater on.

According to Descartes, we need to question everything around us because nothing that we capture through our senses is completely true, since our sense can easily be tricked. The movie iscompletely based on this philosophical thought. We can see this when David Aames begins to see Julie everywhere and even gets to confuse Sofia. All this confusion leads David to “accidentally” killSofia because he really thinks Julie has replace her as a result of a bad trick.

All through the movie, David Aames tries to find what is going on with his life, questioning and trying toremember everything that had happed after the accident guided by a psychologist. This search of the truth is a clear example of epistemology where the psychologist plays the role of the philosophicalquestions by giving him the direction and constant questioning that can lead him to gather all the information needed to finally understand his personal world. All over the movie there is a constant askingof "what is happiness to you?", but we can only know the answer at the end because he constantly refuses to answer.
