Abandon Ship!
Dougal Roberton had a small farm in the north of England. After fifteen years as a farmer, Dougal was not happy with his life.
One Sunday morning in 1968 Dougal heard some news on theradio about a round-the-world yacht race. His family listened while he told them about the race. He tried to describe what it was like sailing alone in the wide, empty ocean. Suddenly Neil, one ofthe nine-year-old twins, shouted, “Daddy’s a sailor! Why can’t we go round the world?”
Sandy, the other twin, said “that’s a great idea! Let’s buy a boat and go round the world!”
“Why not?” Dougalthought. “let’s have a great adventure and sail round the world!” the children will see some wonderful things and meet lots of different people. I was a sailor for twelve years and I’ve got a MasterMariner’s certificate. Lyn is a nurse. We can speak a few foreign languages! After fifteen years on the farm we’re all in good physical condition. Yes! We’ll do it!”
So during the next two years Dougaland Lyn sold the farm and made preparations for a voyage round the world. Dougal bought a small schooner called Lucette, which was 12 meters long. There was also a life raft on board that inflatedautomatically.
In January 1971, when the Robertsons left Falmouth, everybody was excited. They began their voyage across the Atlantic from the Canary Islands. Then they visited the West Indies and theBahamas, where Anne fell in love with a young man from Canada. When they stopped in Miami for a while, Dougal bought a fiberglass dinghy.
In February 1972 Anne, who was nearly twenty years old, decidedto stay in the Bahamas with her Canadian boyfriend. The rest of the family sailed on to Jamaica, and then south to Panama. There, a 22-year-old student called Robin Williams, who was travellingaround the world, asked the Robertsons to take him to New Zealand. One morning in May 1972 they sailed into the Pacific Ocean towards the Galapagos Islands.
