NELSON MANDELA
Nelson Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918. He was elected as the first black President of South Africa in a fully representative democratic election. He hasbeen named “the greatest and the most courageous leader of our generation”. He has been a leader since he was a teenager because his father died whenever he was very young, so he had to become thechief of his tribe. Though he had many responsibilities, he continued studying at the high school. Also he has demonstrated that he is a self-starter because when he was studying Arts at the Hare FortUniversity, Mandela and some friends began a boycott against university policies. After that, he had to move out. Later he studied for a bachelor of laws in 1942. Two years later, in 1944, Mandela joinedthe African National Congress. Even though he is a lawyer, when he established at the ANC, Mandela found out that he was born to be a politician. In 1952, he was promoted and he became the ANC’sleader. He has always demonstrated that he is a free spirit and a risk taker because he’s realized atypical and radical movements. He fought against the racist regime of South Africa. Mandela wanted ademocratic, egalitarian and multiracial state; and he got it since he is an overachiever, although it was too difficult because there were too many obstacles but he worked harder than necessary tosucceed. Since Mandela started to fight for getting South Africa’s freedom, in 1964, he was arrested. Even though Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment, Mandela stayed at jail during 27 years. Duringhis years in prison, Nelson Mandela’s reputation increased. Mandela was accepted as the most significant black leader in South Africa and became a potent symbol of resistance. He was released onFebruary 11, 1990. Mandela could be released in 1985 because he received a freedom’s offer, but he has always followed his goals, so Mandela turned down this offer.
