El virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH) es unlentivirus (de la familia  Retroviridae) . Fue descubierto y considerado como el agente de la naciente epidemia de sida por el equipo de Luc Montagnier enFrancia en 1983. 

PRIMERA BARRERA
La superficie corporal constituye la defensa inicial frente una infección vírica. Una vez rota, se produce la activación de la respuestainmune innata o inespecífica, en la cual participa el interferon (IFN), las células NK y los macrófagos. A medida que la infección progresa, se produce el despliegue de la respuesta inmunitaria adaptativa o específica, en la que participan los linfocitos T citotóxicos (CTL), células T colaboradoras (TH) y anticuerpos antivíricos.
