Villa Savoie

Villa Savoye’s is contextually integrated into the mechanistic/industrial context of the early 20th century, conceptually defining the house as a mechanized entity.

Villa Savoye is the reflectionof 3 basic ideas of Le Corbusier:
“The house is a machine for building.” So here the functions and relations of daily life are very important in the design.
The house as object that is laid in thelandscape and can be placed in every part of the earth.
The movement of the cars to get inside the house.
The house is based in a rectangular volume that appears to be floating above the forestedpicture background supported by pilotis that seems to dissolve among the tree line, for this aim, the lower level is also painted green to reinforce the perception of a floating volume.
To achieve thisobjective, Le Corbusier followed his “reinterpretation of the ten books of Vitruvius) the 5 points of architecture, a checklist of necessary components of design, which villa Savoy is tailored. These5 points are:
-Pilotis (slender columns)
-Roof garden
-Open Plan
-Ribbon Windows
-Free Façade (free of structural members)
The ground floor is largely determined by the movement of a carentering in the building, reflected in the curved wall. This movement determines the structure, based on an octagonal grid of concrete columns, what lets volume “float” in the landscape.
All the levels areconnected with a series of ramps (and also stairs) that go from the lower level to the rooftop garden, structuring the house experience and composition. Transforming the division between interior andexterior in a gradual experience.
In the first floor all the main functions are placed, dividing the space by walls and full glass walls, free of loads, closing the volume with a concrete façadewith ribbon windows. A set of uniform band of openings that treat every view equally… The rooms are private, placed next to the façade, and around the ramp, linking the private areas to more public...
