Comparing the viscosity of oil fractions

Plan for the experiment:
The variables in the experiment are the following
* Dependent: Time
* Independent: Amount of oil
* Controlled:Distance (every 10 centimetres)
The equipment:
* Measuring cylinder
* Murrieta
* Timer
* Oils: Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene
* Pipette

Valeria’s idea
Was to test how fast plasticinetravelled through a tube with the different kinds of oils, by recording the time the plasticine took to travel down every 5 centimetres. For making the experiment fair we will use a balance to weighevery little plasticine ball to weigh 3.8 grams. By using this we will see the viscosity all the oils we are trying, we are putting 250 ml meaning we would use 5 balls of plasticine. If the plasticineball takes a long time to travel down the tube with the oil this will mean the viscosity of the oil is high.
Karina’s idea
It’s the same objective but with a different method, the idea is to use aMurrieta and pour 50 ml of each of the different oils selected, which are the following: petrol, kerosene and diesel. Open the cap the Murrieta to let the oil drop on the beaker while we are recordingthe time the oil takes to reach every 10 centimetres until there is no oil left in the Murrieta. By making this we will see the time each oil takes to finish, if the viscosity is high this means thatit will take more time to drop. The test will be fair because while opening the cap of the Murrieta it will travel with the same strength.

Actual experiment
We have decided to carry outKarina’s idea because we think that this is a more fair experiment because we will have a better opportunity to record the results in a more accurate way and that the oil will have an easier way to travel. Wedidn’t do Valeria’s idea because it would have been more difficult to get more accurate results to record the time that the plasticine took to travel the oil because it will travel faster and the...
