Density Practice

-First Part1-Objectives

Our objective in this practice is to determinate the density of ethanol, acetone and the density of a solid (pellets) using a pycnometer and using too the density of water.

2-DescriptionThe density of substance is physical property defined by the quotient of the mass divided by the volume of a substance.We can determinate with detail the density of a substance using a pycnometer.Apycnometer is a type material that has a volume fixed. First we calculate the volume of the pycnometer using the mass of the pycnometer empty and the mass of the pycnometer divided by the density of aliquid we know (we will use the density of water).

After that, we measured the weight of the pycnometer with the two liquids that we have to calculate their respectives densities:acetone and ethanol using the next formula that relates: the mass of the empty pycnometer, the mass of the pycnometer with water inside , the density of a liquid that we know which is water and themass of the pycnometer with the liquid that we need to know the density (water).

pl=po* (ml-mp)/(mo-mp)

pl= the density of the liquid that we have to calculate

po= the density of the waterml= the mass of the pycnometer with the liquid inside

mp= the mass of the empty pycnometer.A

mo= the mass of the pycnometer full of water
