Water Movie Review

The movie is very interesting because of the original topic it sustains.
It’s is set in 1938, in the colonial India. It describes how Indian widows are condemned to spend the rest of their lives inan institution.
“Child. Do you remember getting married? Your husband is dead. You're a widow now.” This is one of the movie quotes with which the film starts. Chuyia is an amazing 8 year oldcharacter that even though she’s going through a difficult moment, is calmed, a good friend and full of faith. But of course it’s something hard because being in an institution without going out isunimaginable, and even more at that short age. It isn’t only being in a same place for the rest of their life, but also the fact of losing a part of themselves, because when a husband dies, the widow shouldbe and feel incomplete. If they don’t feel that way, they’re wrong and are defrauding their deceased husband. In fact, widows have three options: Merry their husband’s younger brother, die with theirhusband or have a life full of abnegation. These are three things so difficult to do, so most of them prefer to live the way widows have to live.
The director is Deepa Mehta, a Canadian philosopherthat also directed the films Fire and Earth, which are the complementary of Water. I liked the film because of its originality, but I expected more of what she did in it. She’s not only a good directorbut a good philosopher, and she’s internationally recognized. I think she could have done better because the film was a bit ironic because there are some details out of place, for example one of theleads isn’t entirely Indian. Also, the development of the love story, which I’ll give you details ahead. Most of Deepa’s films are related to Indian culture and social issues. On 2007 Water won theAcademy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (making it the first canadien non-french film of receiving a nomination on that category.
