! WARNING
When working on air system components the following precautions should be
observed.

Installation
Guide
L31089

Rev. 12/01

1. Stop the engine when working under a vehicle. Always block the vehicle
wheels to prevent a fore or aft roll. Bleeding off system pressure may cause the
vehicle to roll. Keep hands away from brake chamber push rods and brake
adjusters; they may apply as systempressure drops.
2. Never connect or disconnect a hose or line containing air pressure. It may whip
as air escapes. Never remove a component or a pipe plug unless you are certain
all system air pressure has been exhausted.
3. Never exceed recommended working air pressure and always wear safety
glasses when working with pressurized air. Never look directly into component
ports or direct a pressurizedair flow at anyone.
4. Never attempt to disassemble a component until you have read and understood
all recommended procedures. Some components contain powerful springs and
injury can result if not properly disassembled. Use only proper tools and observe all
precautions pertaining to the use of those tools.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Handle your water pump with care. If the unit is dropped, youcould damage the
shaft, bearing, housing or the internal seal.
2. Drain and flush your cooling system. Check your fan belts, thermostat, radiator
cap, fan, fan clutch and pulleys. (If you are replacing a Cummins suitcase style
water pump, the idler should be replaced at the same time.)

Installation Instructions

3. Clean the water pump surface area on the engine (the area must be cleanand
free of dirt or grease). Install your water pump using a staggered sequence when
tightening the bolts. Once you have your water pump in place and all bolts are
tightened, turn the pump shaft by hand. The pump should rotate freely. If it does
not, you may have to remove the water pump and begin again.
4. Install your fan belts and check belt tension. You should have 1/2" to 3/4" of
deflection. If a fan belt is too tight, it could damage your engine. (See Warranty
Information)

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS (cont’d)
5. Next, install your hoses and fill your cooling system. Check your OEM
specification for cooling additions that may be required. Failure to add the proper
cooling additives could damage your engine. (See Warranty Information)
6. When installing your fan or fan clutch, lookfor bent blades, cracked blades
and/or loose rivets. If you find any of these problems, fan blade replacement is
recommended. A bad fan clutch will damage your water pump. Make sure the
fan clutch is checked for wobble.
7. Start the engine and run until normal operating temperature is obtained. Check
for leaks, vibrations and/or excessive noise.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
1) Water pump bearing failuredue to excessive belt tension is not
warrantable. Refer to engine manufacturer's belt tension recommendations.
2) Premature water pump drive gear wear or failure due to excessive gear
backlash is not warrantable.
3) Continued use of coolant treatment additives containing silicate without
periodic flushing of the cooling system, may result in silicate buildup which can
cause premature failure of thewater pump seal. Water pumps submitted for
warranty with seal failures caused by silicate buildup may be denied. To
prevent silicate buildup and premature water pump seal failure, follow these
procedures:
a) Always flush cooling system when replacing the water pump.

INSTALLATION NOTES
A. Always compare the old water pump to the new water pump to insure they are
the same, especially the impellerstandout.
B. Always inspect the drive gear of the water pump replaced. Any noticeable wear
on the old gear indicates an accessory drive with too much backlash. Excessive
backlash will cause premature water pump gear wear and failure. (See Warranty
Information)

b) Refill with the proper mixture of antifreeze and water as directed by
the OEM manufacturer's specifications.
c) Use a coolant...
