Watergate Incident
Many authors wrote about the Watergate incident and gave their own opinions on the identity of the man behind the burglary. Versions vary,depending on who wrote the story; either people directly involved in the scandal or external observers. The fact remains that the scandal gained a lot of fame with themedia, talked about in books memoirs and films.
“Executive Privilege”
During the investigation, Nixon abused of his executive privilege by keeping information hiddenfrom the investigators. Since then, executive privilege has had a negative connotation attached to it. Various authors believe executive power allows President’s towithhold information. Others think the use of executive privilege should not be disregarded just because of Nixon’s abuse.
“Campaign Finance”
The issues about campaignfinance were raised because of the Watergate incident. The Election Campaign Act was created to avoid unethical fund raising. However, seeing that the Congress alsobenefits from campaign funding, the measures in use to limit these funds are questionable.
“Presidential/Media Relations”
Both Watergate and Vietnam have changed the waypolitics is reported dramatically. The media changed its behavior, from a descriptive to a prescriptive style. This, along with a complete coverage of behavior andworkings, has lead to the limitation of the President's office.
“Clinton Scandals VS Watergate”
The only two Presidents’ in history to have faced impeachment areClinton and Nixon. Both Presidents accused the media of hostile treatment and invasive behavior, although it is arguable that Clinton's offensives were ones for impeachment.
