WEAK AND STRONG FORMS


Many common grammar word in English have two pronunciations, that are: Strong form and Weak form.

WEAK FORM
The weak form is the usual pronunciation with /ə/

-It's used when the word is UNESTRESSED.
-It's use in connected speech.
*I don't want to say that.

-And they are called 'grammar words'


STRONG FORMS
-The strong form is used onlywhen the word is stressed

-For example, when it's the last word:
*We can try

-To give special emphasis

-And they are called 'meaning words'

The words that have weak and strong form are:*Prepositions
*Auxiliary verbs
*Modal verbs
*Articles

Situations when weak become in strong:
at the end of the sentence


SHORT AND LONG FORMS

Short and long forms are contractions for thenegative form of the verb, and the positive form only some of the, has short and long form.
*The short form is normally used in speaking and is sometimes used in writing, specially writing in ainformal style.
*The long form is for formal writing and speaking.
For example:
Affirmative Negative
