WHAT IS A WHOLE FOOD?

There are so many different foods to eat! Whether we visit the supermarket, a deli, a restaurant or any place that serves food, we see that there are a lotof choices out there! But how do we know which choices to make so that we can pick the foods that are the best for us? Usually, the foods that are most nutritious are called wholefoods. But what exactly is a whole food? A whole food is:  a food that has nothing added to it or taken from it.  a food in the form that it is found in nature. A food that is not awhole food is called a processed food. This means that the food was changed in some way from the form it was found in nature. Some processed foods may not be changed very much whileothers can barely be recognized as having come from nature! Think about an apple. An apple is a whole food. Now think about applesauce. Apples have been changed a little bit— the skinhas been taken away, the fruit has been mashed up, and maybe a little bit of cinnamon has been added for some spice. These apples have been processed a little bit. Now think aboutsomething like a toaster apple strudel. The apples in this look like a gel and taste very different than apples you would pick from a tree. This toaster apple strudel has a lot of addedsugar and chemicals that don’t make it such a healthy choice. So next time you’re thinking about what you’d like to eat, think about the apple example—and remember: foods can beprocessed in different ways. While some processed foods can be healthy choices, many processed foods have been changed in such a way that really make sticking to the whole foods better.Spices...
