What makes of education a good tool for life?
First of all, we need to know what education is about. According to the definition of Cambridge Dictionary, education is “the process of teaching orlearning in a school or college, or the knowledge that you get from this”. Other dictionaries (Oxford, Longman) and sources say quite the same. But as we can see, it’s a restrictive point of view of theconcept because education is more than that.
Education is a broad concept and we cannot conceive it as an ordinary process of acquiring and collecting knowledge, more specifically contents, withoutunderstanding its value; academic basics are important but education also implies creativity, motivation, vision, processing of knowledge, ability to learn from failure and even emotions. It means theunderstanding of knowledge and uses it as a part of our day-to-day life.
The fact is that tests does not measure intelligence or ability, it does not measure how our brain processes information, orhow it develops opinions, alternatives, evaluations, especially in high school. Actually, in these institutions it’s the other way around; teachers give contents to students without a clear purpose, sothen there’s nothing to process outside memorizing answers for the test.
Then, as we can see it, education in our country does not inspire or motivate anyone while memorizing turn off the desire tolearn. Instead of that education’s mission should be to develop a love to learn that stays with students throughout their lifetime.
Natural skills have to be considered to reach this goal becauseknowledge itself has no value, but intrinsic skills or abilities give us the chance to comprehend the knowledge that we are receiving from the teacher. Therefore, both knowledge and comprehension of thatknowledge need to be united one to each other to achieve a plenty lifestyle.
