A LEADER THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

 

Who does not want to be a leader? I believe that as much as I do, most people wish to become leaders and role models in different aspects such as inthe family, in a community, in an Organization and most importantly, in a company. We all have dreams and the desire to win and reach our goals, because as human beings we are naturally programmed toneed to thrive. On our daily basis every day comes as a new chance to achieve, one that makes you feel alive and gives you the opportunity to take some risks and the strength to keep on fighting againstall odds.

Despite the common believe that intelligence, toughness, determination and vision are the key qualities for leaders, they are yet insufficient. They are certainly important but are notthe determining factor for what makes an outstanding leader. According to Daniel Goleman, the essential element for a true effective leader is without doubt what he defines as emotional intelligence.Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and control one’s and other’s emotions, which has proven to be incredibly effective in the business world. The higher the rank of a person in acompany, the higher emotional intelligence is expected to have as they are in charge of more duties and employees. Emotional intelligence is made up of five components: self-awareness, self-regulation,motivation, empathy and social skill.

Implementing the concept of emotional intelligence is like a chain of events. It is a number of actions and their effects that are linked together. It begins byacknowledging one’s strengths and weaknesses, channeling them in useful ways and creating a fair and calm environment in the workplace. Once these are achieved, then it is much easier for the leaderto carry out new projects and to set the bar high not only for himself but also for his team.
