“Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”
1.To what extent is Connie responsible for her actions? To what extent, is she a victim?

The dangers of teenage ignorance:

As the story develops thereader can understand that Connie is responsible for her actions since it appears that neither one of her parents where conscious about her doings or behaviors outside of her house. At the same timeConnie was a victim given the fact that it seems both her parents had left her alone in her decision making at a very young age. The public or readers of the story can capture the image of arebellious teenager. This is a stage of life that its very difficult, as mentioned earlier rebellious and caught in the process of maturity when your body and interest start to change from kid to adult.

Itcan be seen through the story that Connie was mostly responsible for her own actions. Her mother was more concern about her sister June, who was responsible and has her life going in a gooddirection. This is a very good example of her mother comparing her with her sister : ““Why don’t you keep your room clean like your sister? How’ve you got your hair fixed—what the hell stinks? Hair spray? Youdon’t see your sister using that junk” (1083). Connie’s mother was always comparing them. Connie had to mature and assume responsibility for her actions and understand that everything she did wasgoing to have consequences.

In the story you can see some examples of rebellion against the adults when they mention : “Sometimes they did go shopping or to a movie, but sometimes they went acrossthe highway, ducking fast across the busy road, to a drive-in restaurant where older kids hung out”(1084). At the exact moment when Connie made the choice about doing something outside of her ageapproved conduct, she could assume that great consequences would come along. She made the choice of going in a wrong direction, disobeying or going over her age limits, even when both she and her friend...
