1. I understood almost nothing about the woods until it was nearly too late. And that was strangebecause my ignorance was based on knowledge. Most of my life it seems I’ve been in the forest or on the sea. Most of my time, sleeping& walking, has spent outside, in close contact with what we call know the environment what my uncles simply used to call “the woods”.
Wehunted small and large game. We hunted
& killed animals. But I still did not learn anything.
Yet, I was a hunter. A wild one.
2. out of the anchorage, justmadness. At dawn we break into the forest and were treated with a spectacular sight. We must cross the Alaska Range.
Over rainy pass and down through the gorge. AtRhone River I take my 24 hour mandatory break. In the dark we roar wildly through some trees. In
