World water day

The World Water Day is observed on March 22 since 1993 when the United Nations General Assembly declared March 22 as World Day for Water.States were invited to devote the Day to implement the UN recommendations and set up concrete activities as deemed appropriate in the national context. Thisday was first formally proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Wateris considered to be the most important resource for sustaining ecosystems, which provide life-supporting services for people, animals, and plants. Becausecontaminated water is a major cause of illness and death, water quality is a determining factor in human poverty, education, and economic opportunities.

Today, hundreds of millions of people do not have access to improved sources of drinking water, leaving them at risk for water-, sanitation-, and hygiene- (WASH)related diseases. Worldwide, 1.5 million children die annually from diarrheal illnesses that are caused by unsafe water, poor sanitation, and inadequate hygiene. The UN and its member nations devote this day to implementing UN recommendations and promoting concrete activities within their countries regarding theworld's water resources. Each year, one of various UN agencies involved in water issues takes the lead in promoting and coordinating international activities forWorld Water Day. In addition to the UN member states, have used World Day for Water as a time to focus public attention on the critical water issues of our era.
