Of course people are living longer now, some years ago you were lucky if were older than 50, and now you can arrive perfectly to the eighties or even nineties.

I guess the main reason it is because during the last 100 years medicine has progressed morethan we can imagine. Today, hospitals have more technology, more medicines, more doctors and nurses, then it is possible to detect an infection or an illness before it is too late.

For example in the past an infection or flu was one of the most common causes of mortality, nowadays almost everybody have ever had flu or an infection in their lives and they are still alive.

Plagues control alsohave a really important role here, in the past plagues like the bubonic or the black plague were propagated really fast even overseas infecting everybody, killing thousands of people. However nowadays plagues or epidemics are controlled almost at the same moment that happen.

Another reason could be that nowadays people are more aware of their health; they have more knowledge and they are morecareful.

However there are still lots of illnesses without cure like MS, AIDS or some kinds of cancer. Medicine still needs to progress to find a cure for these illnesses and avoid the pain and the suffer that they cause.

There is where the research and the laboratories enter. Scientifics of every country are working trying to find a cure for all these illnesses or mortality causes without anycure. Private labs developing new medicines, hospitals with clinic essays, or universities with R & D departments, let´s hope they find anything and within 100 years the next one who has to do this writing task can not finish like I am doing.

A company has announced that it wishes to build a large factory near your community. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this new influence onyour community. Do you support or oppose the factory? Explain your position.

Well I guess it has lots of advantages and disadvantages. I would be definitely opposed because I do not like industrialized cities and less to live in an industrial part of the city.

Thinking about advantages I just can think about a few of them.

The first one could be that the company will employ lots of peoplefrom the community, finishing with the unemployment problems. But that advantage is just possible in a community with unemployment problems or in a community that it is not a residential part. People who live in residential parts live there because they like to be away from noises or pollution, they just want to be relaxed and safe when they are at home.

Another advantage could be that to buildthe factory the company needs to buy the floor for it, invest in the infrastructure, pay taxes… and all these things involves a lot of money for the community.

But I can see more disadvantages than advantages.

What about the pollution, large factories pollutes a lot, and pollution is not the only point, also noises and smells. How the people from the community are going to live like that? Ithas been demonstrated that pollution, noises and smells affect the happiness of the people. People who live in industrialized parts have a more passive or even depressive behavior.

I guess I am opposed because I live in a residential part of the city, and I really like it because to live where I live is really relaxing. I do not have noises, pollution or smells; I just can be on the couch andhave a nap. Imagine with a factory next where I live, it would be impossible. If that would happen anytime, I would move without any doubt.
