One Year of Wasiymi Wasiki
I will never forget that day three years
ago when Jorge, Matt, Jose and I met in
a small restaurant in the main square in
Lurin, Peru. We were all exhausted, as it
was our only day of rest from working
with the children at the shelter. Wasiymi
Wasiki was born that day. We spent the
afternoon setting out ournew organization’s aims, future plans and goals.
Many days have passed since that day
when we discussed the problems afflicting the youth in Peru: education, the
social situation and poor health.

In these contexts the conditions in which
educators operate constrain their teaching. Educators often do not have the
technical knowledge and computer
skills to integrate computers in theirdaily lessons. Even more so, they are
unable to receive training to improve
their skills. Due to such obstacles teachers feel unable to overcome the problems
affecting education. These pessimistic
attitudes unintentionally contribute to
maintaining a pedagogical approach
that produces limited results.

Wasiymi Wasiki works with boys and
girls from schools in marginalized urban
and ruralcommunities in Peru. In these
communities, we recognize the chasm
dividing rich and poor youth in Peru.
According to UNICEF, almost 45% of
Peruvian children and adolescents
between 0 and 17 years old live in poverty and 19% live in extreme poverty.
Children who live in these contexts
are also the most vulnerable to lifethreatening illness.

“These programs change

In Puno alone, chronicmalnutrition
affects 27% of children younger than five
years old. Of Peru’s 24 provinces, 9 register more than 30% chronic malnutrition.
The worst affected are Huancavelica
at 54%, Ayacucho at 41% and Cajamarca recording 40% of children under
five receiving insufficient nutrition.
These facts clearly demonstrate the
grave situation facing Peru’s youth.
Knowing this, Wasiymi Wasiki has focusedits work on education by implementing
projects to modernize education with
internet access in schools located in rural
areas and “human settlements” or slums.

being there during the organization’s
difficult moments and his moral support that continues to motivate me to
work towards our ideals. To Matt for his
work, commitment, and dedication and
more than anything, hisunconditional
friendship. To Katie for her involvement, dedication and will to ensure
that the projects function and go to the
benefit of the children. To Joseph for his
permanent commitment and for always
being willing to assist Wasiymi Wasiki

in its projects. Lastly, to Randy for his
endless support, ideas and suggestions
for other projects to help us grow and
deepen our impact. I have nothingmore
to say than that as we move forward,
we should think not of ourselves. Instead
we must continue drawing inspiration
from the young people who had given
up, but after our projects came to believe
in themselves and saw a light of hope.
