Final lesson plan: Listening
Level: Intermediate +
Aims:
To give students practice and to develop their skills of listening for gist (skimming) and of listening for detail (scanning).
Topresent and give students practice with vocabulary related to choosing a career (prospectus, program, scolarship, vocational etc,)
Time: 1 hour 30 mins
Assumptions:
Students should be familiar withsome of the vocab that we will cover.
They have already developed listening skills and have practice on skimming for gist and scanning for detail.
Anticipated problems and solutions:
The dialoguemight be to quick for students to understand and keep up with. Play for a second time and if necesarry play for a third time.
Aids: CD with script of dialogue between careers adviser and student.The script: Career adviser and Amy
Adviser: Amy hi. Take a seat. Have you chosen a college yet? You know the deadline is next month!
Amy: I know. it`s a nightmare! It`s such a big decision and if Ichoose the wrong subject. . .
Adviser: Don`t worry! Let`s talk through your options. Did you read the prospectuses I gave you?
Amy: Yes, but there are so many choices. I was thinking about applyingto business school then training as an accountant after I graduate from college. Where`s best?
Adviser: Well, there`s Columbia in New York. It has a really good program and offers excellentscolarships, so you`d only have to pay tuition fees. I also know the course tutor there. You could e-mail him. He`s someone who you`d really like.
Amy: Thanks!
Adviser: So, what do your parents think?Amy: They want me to study something that`s vocational, so they like the idea of business school, but they want me to study somewhere closer to home, in California.
Adviser: Okay, well there`s Stanford.It has an excellent reputation, but you`d have to take an entrance exam and there`s a lot of competition for places. Would you like to study Business Administration with another subject?
