President’s program to focus on raising food production levels

President Enrique Peña Nietosaid that his administration’s National Campaign Against Hunger will not only provide food to “the poorest of the poor,” but also training on improving food production and raising income.
Peña Nietosaid that one of the fundamental aspects of the campaign is increasing productivity and ensuring “that it is fair and profitable.” The program will support the approximately 7.4 million Mexicans livingin extreme poverty not with charity, but by ensuring that they have enough food, the president said, adding that it “is a shift in the fight against poverty.”
The federal government is trying torefocus the resources of federal, state and municipal agencies to improve the environment and reverse poverty and hunger, he said. Peña Nieto said that 50 percent of Mexicans are living in poverty, andincreasing the country’s growth and productivity is the only real way to solve the problem.
Peña Nieto’s National Campaign against Hunger will provide food and basic services to the 400 poorestmunicipalities in the country as determined by the National Statistics Institute (INEGI) and National Council for Social Development Evaluation (Coneval).
Governor Jorge Herrera Caldera said that Mexico’sprogress hinges on winning the battle against hunger and injustice. The Durango government is joining the president’s National Campaign Against Hunger, he said, adding that great causes have nopolitical boundaries. Durango has increasing: one of the nation’s greatest droughts.
There is a lot of poverty and conditions in Durango are now similar to those in the southern states, he said.
