Free Trade Zone in general

Free Trade Zone (Zona Franca) is defined like geographical area inside the national territory, where they are developing industrial activities of goods and services and also commercial activities, under special regulations of taxation, customs and foreign trade.
Goods entering these areas are outside the national custom territories for purposesof taxes on imports and exports. In the Free Trade Zones can´t smuggle arms, explosives, nuclear and toxic waste or chemicals for processing or processing and manufacturing narcotics or drugs.


Division in Colombia

In these days there are eleven Free Trade Zones spread all over the Colombia in the following municipalities: Barranquilla (1), Bogotá (1), Cali (1), Cartagena (2), Cúcuta (1), LaTebaida (1), Palmira (1), Santa Marta (1), Sopó (1) y Rionegro (1). Four of them are located in the coastal territory with easy access to major ports and the remaining seven are strategically located to serve the different production areas.

Here is a brief overview of the Free Trade Zones in Colombia:
Bogota Free Trade Zone
Bogota Free Trade Zone is the Industrial Park of Technology andServices with greater development in the City and the region. It has 100 hectares of field which have more than 245,000 square feet of buildings, housing more than 200 national and multinational companies among investors of several countries of the world. In Colombia, Bogota Free Trade Zone SA offers alternative installations for companies which are interested in establishing industrial plants.Barranquilla Free Trade Zone
It has a developed area of ​​one million square meters located next to the sea and river port. With the advantage of being located next to the port and communicated with a direct interconnection door, it allows that the incoming goods and the export products are mobilized quickly and safe.
Candelaria Free Trade Zone
It is located in the heart of the industrial zoneMamonal, 12 kilometers southeast of Cartagena. There are two major pathways: one is the current via Cartagena and the other is coming from Barranquilla. Mamonal generates about 5% of industrial GDP of the country and more than 15% of its manufactured exports.
Cartagena Free Trade Zone
Zofranca SA is a private company authorized by the Colombian State to perform the management, administration andoperation of the main Free Trade Zone of Cartagena. Its main objective is to support the international commerce development and it is divided into two major sectors: the industrial and commercial sector.
Pacific Free Trade Zone
It is located in the municipality of Palmira, department of Valle del Cauca just 140 km from Buenaventura, Colombia's main seaport over the Pacific Ocean.
Palmaseca FreeTrade Zone
It is located 1,5 hours from main Pacific port Buenaventura Colombia, which handles 60% of the country's international trade.
Rionegro Free Trade Zone
Rionegro Free Trade Zone is located in the department of Antioquia, 30 kilometers from the city of Medellin and the side of the track José María Córdova International Airport. The department of Antioquia is a dynamic industrial andcommercial center of Colombia and the Free Trade Zone represents some manufacturing companies which are leaders in the country. In the area external Antioquia participated 30% of the non-traditional exports of the country.
Santa Marta Free Trade Zone
Santa Marta Free Trade Zone is divided into two main areas. It is in full operation, with users dedicated in various commercial and industrialspecialties.



TYPES OF FREE TRADE ZONES

There are four different types of Free Trade Zones in Colombia. We can divide them to:

Industrial and Commercial Goods and Services
These zones are to promote and develop the process of industrialization, the provision of services intended primarily to foreign markets and marketing.
