A life behind bars
Captivity, loneliness, sadness, stress. How would you feel if you lived all your life caged, deprived of everything you could do if you were free? Most people would agree thatzoos are places where animals use to be mistreated. Nowadays, there are excessive laws that zookeepers have to deal with. In fact, animals receive excellent care and the excessive rape of their rightswas left in the past. But, does anyone ask them if they wanted to live that way? Ladies and gentleman, today I will show you some important aspects about captive animals which you must know in orderto realize they are not just an attraction.
Imagine that a zoo is a place where you can see all the animals that you would not see in everyday life, with very small risk of being harmed. Forexample, by keeping a lion in a zoo we, as zoo visitors, have the opportunity to view it from a closer distance and learn more about it. Zoos usually have a high educational level and even people of old agesfind it interesting and always learn something new. It is also important to remark that by the year 2050 scientists predict that one quarter of Earth animals will become extinct, unfortunately due tothe growth of the human population. So, the main objective of zoos turned to be avoiding extinction by breeding more endangered animals or giving them the chance to live in an ecosystem as close aspossible to their natural habitat. Here in Argentina, the Buenos Aires Zoo provide an active support to the conservation of populations of endangered species such as the Andean condor and their naturalenvironments and also offer support and facilities to increase the scientific knowledge that could benefit conservation.
The question we have to consider is: do zoos really acquire these goals? Arewe thinking what is best for animals or what is best for human benefits? We share around 90% of our genes with all mammals on the planet. Do we really think animals are so naive to know nothing...
