Author

John Kennedy Toole was born in New Orleans the 17 of December of 1973. When he wrote the book ‘A Confederacy of Dunces’, he sent themanuscript to a famous publishing house called Simon and Schuster but they didn’t want to publish it because they said that the book talked about nothing. The true was that the book touched a lot of sorepoints of the society. After this, Toole lost his hope, he started to drink and felt an absolute failure. He was so depressed that he finally committed suicide in 1969 when he was only 31 years old.After his death, his mother convinced a famous writer called Walker Percy to read her son’s manuscript after calling him hundreds of times. Percy couldn’t believe that the book was so good and finally‘A confederacy of Dunces’ was published in 1980.

The novel won a Pulitzer in 1981 and the prize of the best novel in France the same year.



Argument

‘A Confederacy of Dunces’ is the story ofa strange man called Ignatius J. Reilly. He is a 30 year old man who lives with her mother and who feels disappointed with the society. Actually he would like to live in the Medieval Age andeverywhere he goes he provokes a social agitation.

The title of the novel comes from a sentence of a famous author that says: ‘When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, thatthe dunces are all in confederacy against him’.

The story begins when Ignatius, who lives with her mother doing nothing all day but going to the teather to complain about everything, must look a jobbecause his mother needs the money to pay for a car accident. First he gets a job in a cloth factory but he is dismissed because he tries to start a revolutionary action. After this he gets anotherjob selling hot dogs in the streets but he eats more than he sells.
