A Lesson Before Dying Essay
A Lesson Before Dying- What would the novel be like if it was written now?
My essay is about trying to show the differences of the world during the time the novel was writtenand the novel now and how different it would be if the novel was written about the time we are living in now. The main subject of the novel is racism and prejudice. The difference between that timeand today is that racism and prejudice as hard as it was back then, today it is still seen but not as much as before. Before blacks were seen more like animals than human; today they are given thechance of doing everything and living a life just as the whites do.
A grave problem of the time of the setting of the novel is that the opinion of the whites is always considered first over the blacks’opinion, not to mention the whites are always right even if the truth is they are not. Whites are considered more important during those times while today opinions of blacks and whites are consideredequal. An example which I feel I should express is the one of this year’s run for presidency since this year we have a black candidate running for president of our country. This has been one of thegreatest improvements our country can be proud of.
One of the greatest issues of the novel is the hard labor children had to go through which left them little time for their education. There was alsothe method of education that teachers used as a punishment was physical violence. Today the only work children have to do is school work and the law states that children must receive an education. Asfor teachers using physical violence as punishment, they can be legally arrested. Children were also expected to know what they were taught perfectly. As for now they are allowed to learn at their ownpaste.
There is a part in the novel where Grant goes to buy Jefferson’s radio and the white sales clerk wanted to give him the one that was on the floor instead of giving him a brand new one just...
