Scene 1
Athens, the palace of THESEUS. THESEUS and HIPPOLYTA.
1. THESEUS: Hippolyta, our nuptial hour draws near. In four days it will be the first of the month.
2.HIPPOLYTA: Four days and nights will go by, and then when the new moon is like a silver bow bent in heaven, it’ll be time for our wedding.
3. THESEUS: Then let the parties start among the Athenian youth. I captured you in battle and you fell in love with me when you were my prisoner, but our wedding won’t be any battle!
It’ll be fabulous!
Scene 2
Enter EGEUS, HERMIA, LYSANDER, andDEMETRIUS.
4. EGEUS: Greetings, happy Theseus! Our renowned Duke!
5. THESEUS: Thanks, good Egeus. What news brings you here?
6. EGEUS: I come, with complaint against my daughter, Hermia. Stand forth, Demetrius. My Duke, I’ve given this man my consent to marry her. Stand forth, Lysander! This… man has bewitched my daughter into loving him. You… You… With cunning you have turned herobedience, which is due to me, to stubborn harshness. Now she does not consent to marry Demetrius! I beg, my Lord, the ancient privilege of the Law of Athens: “A she is mine, I may dispose of her”.
Acto I.
Escena 1.
Atenas, el palacio de TESEO. TESEO e HIPOLITA.
1. TESEO: Hipolita, se aproxima la hora de nuestra boda. En cuatro días será primero del mes.
2. HIPOLITA: Deben pasar cuatro díasy cuatro noches, y entonces, cuando la luna nueva sea un arco de plata tendido en el cielo, será la hora de nuestro matrimonio.
3. TESEO: Entonces que la juventud ateniense comience a celebrar. Te conocí en tiempos de guerra y tú te enamoraste de mi cuando eras mi prisionera, sin embargo nuestra boda no será una batalla. Será fabuloso.
Escena 2.
Entra EGEO, HERMIA, LISANDRO Y DEMETRIO.4. EGEO: Saludos, feliz Teseo! Nuestro renombrado Duque.
5. TESEO: Gracias, buen Egeo. ¿Qué novedades te traen por aquí?
6. EGEO: Vengo a quejarme de mi hija, Hermia. Acércate, Demetrio. Mi Duque, le he dado a este hombre mi consentimiento para casarse con ella. ¡Acércate, Lisandro! Este… hombre, ha hechizado a mi hija para que lo ame. Tú… tú… Con astucia has convertido la obedienciaque ella debe en porfiada obstinación. ¡Ahora mi hija no acepta casarse con Demetrio! Suplico, mi señor, el antiguo precepto de la ley de Atenas: “Así como me pertenece, puedo disponer de ella”.
7. THESEUS: What do you have to say, Hermia? Demetrius is a worthy gentleman!
8. HERMIA: So is Lysander, my Lord.
9. THESEUS: Lysander is a good man, but he doesn’t have your father’sapproval, Demetrius does.
10. HERMIA: Please, sir. I would really like to know what would be the worst thing that could happen to me if I refuse to marry Demetrius.
11. THESEUS: Either to die, or never feel the warm touch of a man.
12. HERMIA: If those are my choices, I would rather die or live as a nun before I yield my virginity to Demetrius.
