A Reflective Approach
A Reflective Approach
In our lesson we used the communicative language teaching. Wegave our students many opportunities to practice what they have already known using several activities.
We planned the sequence of our lesson in order to get students engaged using activities whichallow them to participate and share real life experiences. At the same time, these were connected with the topic using examples involving real life situations; it was reflected on oral participationwithout being force, because “learning is not result of instruction. It is rather the result of unhampered participation in a meaningful setting” (Illich 1972: 56).
Discovery activities have animportant part in the study of languages. Sadly, in our task we have the opportunity to show students the pictures and allow them to use the language and share their personal experiences but we do not dothat. The development of our conceptual understanding and cognitive skills is extremely important in the process of exploration which leads genuine understanding. For that reason, in future lesson wehave to encourage students to discover things and expose them to examples, under our guidance, to work out for themselves how it is used. As Harmer said “the things we discover for ourselves areabsorbed more effectively than things we are taught”.
We as teachers have to give our students as much as possible opportunities in class to use English. Engaging students and expose them to English are thekeys what would allows them to activate their language in an unconscious way. What is more, encouraging students to be more autonomous learners need to be our main aim as teachers.
