A Streetcar Named Desire
A Streetcar Named Desire is a play by Tennessee Williams set in the 50’s. It is set in a country that at that moment was home for people who come from other countries. Thatis the case of Stanley Kowalski’s parents. Stanly, a working class Polish-American, is one of the main characters of this play where Estella and her sister Blanche DuBois show up. The arriving ofBlanche to Estella’s house is the beginning of a bunch of arguments among the characters. It looks like Blanche thinks and acts differently that Stanley.
Blanche expected that her sister was living in abetter place. Blanche says to Eunice when she is just arrived “They told me to take a street-car named Desire, and they transfer to one called Cemeteries and ride six blocks and get off at – ElysianFields.” Then Eunice replies “That’s where you are” (15). Blanche is shocked when she finds out where Estella lives. Blanche thought that her sister was living a life according to their social status.She didn’t expect her sister was living in such a poor neighborhood. The reason she repeats the whole instruction to arrive at the address is that she could not believe that her sister was living insuch a neighborhood.
Blanche is an alcoholic, and she does everything that is possible to hide her condition to people who know her because she wants to present a false image to others. Indicating herhabit of drinking and trying to hide it, the stage directions state. “She pours a half tumbler of whiskey and tosses it down. She carefully replaces the bottle and washes out the tumbler at the sink”(18). It is possible to appreciate how much Blanche suffers from alcoholism, and how she tries to hide the fact that she loves to drink. She hides her vice because she is trying to have a fake imagein front of people.
