Chapter 1- The Shop of Monsieur Defarge
A barrel of wine had been dropped and broken in the streets of Saint-Antoine, one of the poorest parts of Paris. Everyone left whatever they were doing and tried to drink some of it. This barrel was property of Monsieur Defarge, who was standing outside his wine shop and looking how a tall man, Gaspard, wrote the wordBLOOD on the wall of the street. Inside the shop, there were two strangers: Mr Jarvis Lorry and Lucie Manette, who had come from England to see Lucie’s father, Dr Manette. After he was set free of the prison la Bastille, Dr Manette was in the care of Defarge and hosted upstairs his wine shop. When Lucie was about to see her father she was afraid and started shaking. When they entered into the room, they found a white-haired man sat on a long bench and making shoes.

Chapter 2- The shoemaker
Dr Manette’s mind had obviously been affected by the long years in prison. At first he took no notice of the visitors. When Mrs Lorry asked the name of the Doctor he answered: ‘One Hundred and Five, North Tower’. Dr Manette finally recognized his daughter by comparing her hair with a sample of hair hehad inside a little bag hanging around his neck. Mrs Lorry, Lucie and his father returned to England.

Chapter 3- The Trial
Five years after they came to London, a trial took place at Tellson’s Bank. The accused man was Charles Darnay, who was thought to help Louis, the French king, in the wars against the King of England. Mr Stryver was the lawyer who defended Darnay and Sydney Carton, wholooked like Darnay, worked for him. Dr Manette and Lucie were there as witnesses. John Barsad was asked and confirmed the accusation, and so did Roger Cly, who said he had seen papers in the prisoner’s room. Mr Lorry was asked as well and replied that he had seen him on board a ship at Calais. Miss Manette confirmed with great pity what Mr Lorry had said and started crying. The Doctor was asked too.Sydney Carton, who seemed not to take notice of anything, wrote a paper and passed it to Mr Stryver, who asked to the last witness if he was sure that who he had seen was Darnay and not Carton. He could not confirm it and Darnay was set free.

Chapter 4- Sydney Carton
After the trial Dr Manette, Lucie, Mr Stryver and Mr Lorry went home and only Darnay and Carton were left. They went to a wineplace where Carton got drunk and explained to Darnay that he desired to stop belonging to the world and that he didn’t like him. Darnay finally paid the bill and went home. Carton didn’t like him because he was so like him in appearance but so much above him in other ways, and also because of Lucie’s thoughts about him. Carton felt asleep and when he woke up, he took himself to Mr Stryver to preparethe cases for the next days. They talked about the misfortune of Carton, who had always done the work for others and life had never recognized his work. He was a good and clever man but he had never been able to make anything of himself or to find peace.
Chapter 5- Dr Manette in London
Four months after the trial, Mr Lorry went to the Doctor’s house, but Miss Pross was the only one at home. Shetold him that she was worried about all the gentlemen who came to see Lucie and then she explained him that sometimes the Doctor got up in the middle of the night and walked up and down remembering his time in prison and that Lucie was the only one with the power to calm down him. Dr Manette and his daughter arrived home and after having lunch together Darnay appeared. Darnay explained thatduring his time in prison some workmen found and old forgotten room with words written by the prisoners on the walls, one of these words was: DIG. The Doctor was suddenly looking at him with anger, but he immediately looked better. At teatime, Carton appeared and a storm took place in the middle of the night.
