Joanne K. Rowling
Joanne Rowling was born on 31 July 1965, at Yate General Hospital, England. She added a “K” to make “J. K. Rowling”, her pen name by request of her publisher, (the “K”correspond to Kathleen, her grandma’s name). Her parents were Peter James Rowling and Anne Volant.
At the age of six years old, Joanne knew that she wanted to be a writer and she wrote her first book“Rabbit” in 1972.
When she was 9 years old, she moved with her family to a small village called Tutshill. There, she went to Wyedean Comprehensive School. The girl loved studying, “very much likeHermione Granger, in Harry Potter’s books”, she says. Having graduated from University in 1986, J. K. Rowling worked In London as an investigator for Amnesty International.
In 1990, she was travellingback from Manchester (where she had spent her holidays) to London on a crowded train, when the idea for Harry Potter simply fell into her head. In December of this same year, Anne Volant died formultiple sclerosis at the age of 45. Anne’s death was an influence in J. K. Rowling’s stories about a young boy who loses his parents at an early age.
Rowling moved to Portugal in 1991, to work as anEnglish teacher. There, she wrote her favorite chapter of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher stone”: “The Mirror of Erised”.
She married a Portuguese man and on July 27th 1993 her first daughter,Jessica, was born. Sadly, the marriage didn’t work and J. K. Rowling and her daughter moved to Edinburgh.
The woman wrote the first three chapters of Harry Potter, she typed them and then she sentthe manuscript off to an agent. Luckily, Christopher Little Literary Agency (a company of literary agents based in London) wrote back asking to see the rest of the manuscript.
In 2001, J. K.Rowling received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, for services to children’s literature.
