Captain's
Primary Flight Display (PFD)

1. Flight Mode Annunciator

Displays 5 columns 3 lines of flight mode annunciations and messages
First columnrepresents Speed Mode
Second column represents the vertical mode
Third is lateral navigation mode
Fourth column indicates the Autopilot’s capability for what concerns the landing phase
Fifth indicates the engaged modes of autopilot/flight director.
In the first three columns of FMA, any indication displayed in green indicates an active
mode, for example ALT indicates the autopilot and/or flightdirector is in altitude hold
mode. An indication in blue is an armed mode (= ready to be activated when all
conditions are met). For example the G/S blue indications means that the autopilot is
ready to intercept the glide slope.
In order to know what mode is engaged, it is vital that the pilot relies on the FMA
indications, not on the MCP. This is where he will for sure recognize that theautopilot,
flight director and/or autothrust is engaged or not.

PFD Airspeed Indications
VMAX
Defined by the lower end of a red and black strip along the speed scale. This indicates

the maximum speed at which the aircraft can be flow. This speed will vary with altitude
and atmospheric conditions and isthe lowest of VMC ( or MMC ), VFE, or VLE if the
landing gear is extended. Computed by the FAC’s.

2.Green Dot Speed
Appears while flying in the clean configuration (= with no flaps/slats extended).
Represents the best lift-to-drag, as computed by the FAC’s and will be the actual speed
at which the pilot will select one step of flaps when decreasing the speed. This also
generally correspondsto the holding speed.

Speed Indicators






F - Minimum Flap Retraction Speed - Appears in green next to the minimum speed
for selecting position 1 when the FLAPS selector is in position 3 or 2. This also
corresponds to the speed at which the pilot will select FLAPS 3 and FLAPS FULL
when decreasing the speed towards landing.Computed by the FACs.
S - Minimum Slat RetractionSpeed - Appears in green next to the minimum speed
for selecting position 0 when the FLAPS selector is in position 1 and also
corresponds to the speed at which the pilot will select FLAPS 2 when decreasing
the speed.. Computed by the FACs.
1 - Decision Speed (V1) - Appears in blue next to the speed entered by the crew
through the MCDU. When out of indication range, appears on upper part ofscale.
Disappears after lift-off.

3. Actual Airspeed Reference Line
Indicates the actual airspeed where the scale value moves in front of the line. Airspeed
indication starts from 30 knots.

4. Speed Trend Arrow
Starting from the airspeed reference line, points to the speed value which will be attained
in 10 seconds if the acceleration remains constant. Appears only when speed difference isgreater than two knots. Disappears when speed difference is less than one knot, or if
FACs fail.

5. Target Airspeed Pointer
Points to the target airspeed value or the airspeed corresponding to the target Mach
number. The pointer is magenta when the target airspeed is the value computed by the
FMGC in managed speed mode. The pointer is blue when the target airspeed is manually
entered on...
