El espectáculo, ¿debe continuar?

Un museo no es un edificio. Es una institución que resguarda, preserva, organiza, documenta, estudia, exhibe y promueve una colección. La biblioteca no es un edificio. Tampoco el
teatro ni la escuela. Parece obvio. También parece obvio que un buen edificio puede hacer que
el museo, la biblioteca, elteatro o el centro de investigación funcionen mejor, que tengan un
mejor marco para la realización de las actividades que se requieren, que sean un escenario
propicio para esos usos.
A museum is not a building. It is an institution for safekeeping, preserving, organizing, documenting,
studying, exhibiting and promoting a collection. A library is not a building, nor is a theater, nor a school.
Itseems obvious. It also seems obvious that a good building can make a museum, library, theater or research center work better, giving them a better frame for the required activities, and a better setting for
those uses.
Yona Friedman se ha preguntado varias veces si es realmente necesario exhibir los objetos de interés dentro de un edificio. Seguramente no: se puede sacar el museo a la calle —nocualquier museo o no
todo de cualquier museo, pero se puede—. La biblioteca son los libros, y ni siquiera los libros simplemente, sino los libros abiertos
cuando se les lee y acaso tampoco los libros leídos, sino lo que narran.
Ray Bradbury imaginó una biblioteca hecha de hombres y mujeres
en la que cada uno conocía un libro entero de memoria: la comunidad es la biblioteca. “Puedo tomar cualquierespacio vacío y llamarlo un escenario desnudo —escribió Peter Brook—.Un hombre camina por ese espacio vacío mientras otro lo observa, y eso es todo lo que
se necesita para realizar un acto teatral. Sin embargo —continúa
Brook—, cuando hablamos de teatro no queremos decir exactamente eso. Telones rojos, focos, verso libre, oscuridad se superponen confusamente en una desordenada imagen que se expresacon una palabra útil para muchas cosas”. Y la escuela: la academia puede salir
o, más bien, regresar al jardín, alrededor del árbol del conocimiento
original bajo cuya sombra el maestro habla con sus alumnos.
En un libro reciente, Deyan Sudjic escribe que en nuestros días,
los museos, que son las más conspicuas de estas instituciones, ya no
son lugares cuya misión principal sea conservar objetosvaliosos ni
tesoros nacionales, sino que se han convertido en focos de ocio, de
renovación urbana y de espectáculo. Eso no es necesariamente algo
negativo en sí mismo, pero el espectáculo no va desligado del negocio

Yona Friedman has asked several times if it is really necessary to display
objects of interest inside a building. It isn’t: you can take the museum onto
the street—perhaps not anymuseum or not all of any museum, but it’s possible. The library is its books, and not even just books, but the books when
they are open and being read, and maybe not even the books that are being
read, but instead what the books are saying. Ray Bradbury imagined a library made up of men and women in which each one knew an entire book by
heart: the community is the library. “I can take any empty spaceand call it
a bare stage,” wrote Peter Brook. “A man walks across an empty space whilst
someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of
theater to be engaged. Yet,”—he continued—“ when we talk about theater this
is not quite what we mean. Red curtains, spotlights, blank verse, darkness,
these are all confusingly superimposed in a messy image covered by one allpurposeword.” And the school: the class can go out or rather return to the
garden, around the original tree of knowledge under whose shade the teacher speaks with his pupils.

the primary purpose of preserving valuable objects or national treasures,
