The International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI
It is usually foundprinted inside the battery compartment of the phone. It can also be displayed on the screen of the phone by entering *#06# into the keypad on most phones. Find it and have it somewhere else written,in the event you have the misfortune because S--- happens!
The IMEI number is used by a GSM network (Global system for mobile) to identify valid devices and therefore can be used for stopping astolen phone from accessing that network. For example, if a mobile phone is stolen, the owner can call his or her network provider and instruct them to "blacklist" the phone using its IMEI number. Thisrenders the phone useless on that network and sometimes other networks too, whether or not the phone's SIM is changed.
If mobile equipment is stole or lost, the owner can contact their local operatorand ask to block the EIR: Equipment Identity Register. The IMEI is placed into a register called CEIR: Central Equipment Identity Register that black list that device with all other operator switchesrendering the device useless. There is databases like Immobilize (not available in United States but Countries like United Kingdom) which allows free and optional registration of the device by thepublic. The Pro: The advantage of this service is that if you device is found by the police, they will return it to you. Cons: Police have access and can not only retrieve the owner in the event of acrime, felony or offense, but track and locate you by satellite and even eardrop on you. I believe it is being done anyway but with the big brother authority. To become public domain it will be acivil liberty issue, debatable and things like how private is your privacy and... Ahem!
