Women and men’s roles
For centuries before the early 1900's, there was a prominent male domination in the country of China. In ancient china men ruled the household and had complete controlover his wife. The only role of the wife was to be a servant to their husbands and to produce sons for them so the sons could carry on the family name. Women's main duty was to bear a male offspringfor her husband, it was reasonable for a husband to remarry if his first wife cannot bear him a son. Obey her husband even her son when he grows older. There were limited occupations or jobs for women.Education for women was not popular or at times not allowed, but they could receive limited education to enable them to teach their sons. Women was often not respected if they weren't married, it isextremely hard for a women to be self-reliant in ancient China. Beginning around the eleventh century, foot binding became a tradition. When a girl became three or four years of age her mother wouldtightly wrap her daughter's feet in bandages with her toes tucked under the soles. On top of this excruciating pain, the bandages would be tightened each day. If a woman's feet weren't bound she wasconsidered unsuitable for marriage. In fact, it was preferred that the foot be around 3 inches in length. The gruesome foot binding process as well as the other harsh treatment toward women in Chinacontinued for centuries until the demands by the nationalists of the 1920's called for women's rights. Mao Tse-Tung and the Communist Party formally outlawed many of the old Chinese laws and traditionsthat they viewed as not benefiting the state.
