Hip Hop and R&B

In today’s society Hip Hop and R&B or rhythm and blues, are very popular music genres and are both very similar. Due to their similarities, some people even think they areboth the same. The truth is, if they were both the same they would not have different names; therefore there are a reasons why each genre has a different name. Every time, one is to compare differentmusic genres one must analyze carefully their rhythms, instruments being played and singing style. The reason some people think Hip Hop and R&B are the same, is that they are similar in those threeareas, but certainly they are just similar, not the same.

When it comes to rhythm, R&B is softer and slower than Hip Hop. But, sometimes some Hip Hop songs tend to be a little soft or slow dueto some sentimentalism behind the lyrics. Still, they are different than R&B songs because even though they might be a little soft or slow they have loud beats, melodic sounds and rapping that no onewould listen in any R&B song. But, what makes it confusing is that sometimes some R&B songs have kind of loud beats, cool melodic sounds and a little rapping. Still, if one is to compare this type ofsong with a soft or slow Hip Hop song, one will notice that the R&B song has more of a blues rhythm that makes it more like a ballad and the Hip Hop song doesn’t have any of that, is simply another HipHop song that is a little slower or softer than other ones of its type. A good example on this type of comparison can be noticed in the songs of the artist Trey Songz who is a great R&B and Hip Hopartist.

On the instrumental side, they both use the same instruments. They use synthesizers for drum beats and melody that are composed most of the time on computer programs. Sometimes alittle guitar or piano solo is added. Therefore, when Hip Hop or R&B artists do a live performance usually what one will see on the stage is the main singer or singers, disc jockeys, keyboard piano...
