Cataplexy
Cataplexy is a neurological disorder which causes people to lose muscle tone and strength for a brief period of time.
It usually occurs inpeople with a sleep disorder called narcolepsy.
The exact cause of cataplexy is unknown, but the condition is linked to an emotional stimulus such asfear, anger, laughter, orgasm, surprise, embarrassment…
Occurrence
The occurrence of cataplectic attacks in a 24 hour period is between the hours of 10 amand 9 pm and very few attacks occur between the hours of 10 pm and 9 am.
Attacks can last from a few seconds up to ten minutes, and may occur up to 5 and6 times per week.
Cataplexy is considered “typical” when it is always of short duration (< 5 minutes).
What are cataplexy effects?
Cataplexyaffects social life, as they are afraid of many things, such as pick up babies because they may drop them.
It can be embarrassing as they can fall asleep atany time
epidemiology
Incidence: 1 in 3,000 people in the US have cataplexy
Prevalence: Cataplexy is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of RareDiseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Cataplexy, or a subtype of Cataplexy, affects less than 200,000 people in the USpopulation.
Narcoplepsy
It is not caused by mental illness or psychological problems. It is most likely affected by a number of genetic mutations andabnormalities that affect specific biologic factors in the brain, combined with an environmental trigger during the brain's development (such as a virus).
