Coastal Revtments
A) What of the equations defining the closure depth is used in SMC?
As it is proved in the Mathematica file attached to this document, Birkemeier’s equation is
used inSMC program.
B) Expression of the borrowed sediment size that establishes the limit between
intersecting and non intersecting profile.
After some calculations showed at the end of this document, the expression that relates
the size of the borrowed sediment to the beach profile are showed in the following, depending
on the given data of the problem: the shoreline advancement, or the addedvolume.

In the proposed example, the values of the input data needed in the program SMC to
run and were introduced inthe equation before are the following:

0.51
And the value obtained in the equation for
. This means that if the value of
we have an intersecting beach profile, and a nonintersecting beach profile in
the opposite case.
This difference can be observed changing the value of the borrowed sediment size in the
SMC program two values of the borrowed sediment coefficientare obtained, one that is
higher and another that is lower than the limit value.
