Colombia is one of the countries whose alimentation is based in corn. The zones where there are corn crops are mainly the low lands where soil is fertile, so corn can be harvested up to 3 times ayear. It also can be cultivated in the coldest places in the country but it has lower results because it would grow slower. The most productive and important regions are Antioquia, Cordoba, Meta,Cundinamarca, Magdalena and The Cauca Valley. The most common corn here in Colombia is the yellow or the white one, there are more then 100 varieties of corn, but these 2 are mainly the one we can find atthe market. Corn is a very important product, it is not only used as grain to feed humans but to feed animals tool. Corn is also used as oil, flour, its “salvado” is very useful and popcorn. This is whycorn has a very high demand all over the world, because it is the main product for the fabrication of millions of other products all around the world. Corn is the alimentary plant with the biggestdistribution all around the world, not only in Colombia.
There are many characteristics for the cultivation of corn, it needs plowing the land, and farmers have to clear the fields, unroot bad weeds,cut bad tree-branches, and all other materials. The climate must be between 25ºC and 30ºC, which is some kind of warm climate. Soil must be fertile and deep, rich in organic materials and with goodwater circulation. Plantation begins when soil has a temperature of 12ºC. Seeds are put 5cm under soil. It is planted in rows, with a distance of 0.8-1m between them and a distance of 20-25cm betweeneach seed. Harvesting this product MAY BE difficult due to mountains in some places in the country.
