The true behind Disney
Disney is the company that has influenced childhood since the 50’s. The largest media conglomerate industry in the world is found byWalt and Roy Disney in 1923 and five years later it creates it’s main symbol, Mickey Mouse. This company is well-known for it’s cartoons and with more than 20 movies and hundreds of characters, Disneyhas earned thousands of millions and followers around the world. It’s creations are based on fantasy and unreal characters, which are quite striking to children eyes, are the base of this huge empirethat earns millions of dollars every day. In class we watched “the princess and the frog”, the last princess movie that Disney showed in the past decade. In base of this movie I am going to talk aboutthe different social issues and meanings that Disney is trying to show with it.
To analyze Disney movies we have to keep in mind three facts: race, family and gender.
The princess and the frog isthe first movie of Disney where an African- American girl is the main character. We have seen that most of the princesses in Disney movies are white: Snow white, Cinderella, Belle, Ariel. This facthas been cataloged as a way of racism for some people. The term racist is a little bit radical because we have seen that Disney has not put away other cultures like Asians (Mulan) or natives(Pocahontas). But is a fact that Disney does not have a movie where most of the characters are black. I think people around the world feel identify, in any aspect of their life, with any of Disney’s movies. Forexample, I have a friend who lost his dad in an accident when he was a kid. He says that his favorite movie is the Lion King because it represents his situation years ago.
