Demagogy: “The power of the word”
“The economy is killing our budget. The gas prices are too high! If you elect me as your governor, I promise you the gas prices will never increase at all!” saidMr. Thomas Linn, a candidate for a governor of Kingstown. He repeated the same speech again and again, every time, everywhere as part of his campaign, before the election. Mr. Thomas Linn had strongmatter in his speech “the gas prices”, and his words were so powerful that the voters were convinced to vote for him; however, Mr. Thomas Linn did not have any idea how he could manage the economy toreduce the gas prices in a future government of Kingstown, but he was very sure about his target: he wanted to be the governor of Kingstown no matter what, and he would make false and unfeasiblepromises to get the majority of the votes and win the election. This practice is called Demagogy. In politics, it is the art to make false promises and statements to get or preserve the power. Most of thepoliticians practice Demagogy no matter how, but at the end of their governments there are many promises that they did not fulfill, because those promises were false.
The term Demagogy comes from Greek“leadership of the people”. In the old Greek, the connotation of Demagogy was not the same as today. Actually, Demagogy had a positive connotation as the ability to speak and deal with the crowd,however, honesty was not questioned. Later still, in old Greek, the term Demagogy developed another connotation, that is the one that is current right now. Then, Demosthenes described Demagogy as “tosay what people want to hear”, and Aristotle described Demagogy as the government supported in the people, but in favor of particular interests.
During the time that connotation of the term Demagogyhad been preserved. For instance, Machiavelli in his book “The prince” established that Demagogy is important in politics, since it helps to get the power easily and consolidate it. Moreover, he said...
