CHAPTER 11: THE CELL CYCLE & RELATED LECTURES
1. What are the main functions of cell division?
* - Growth
* - Wound Repair
* - Reproduction
2. List the phases of the cellcycle in their correct sequence.
- G1 phase, S phase (synthesis), G2 phase (collectively known as interphase) and M phase
(mitosis)
3. State the meaning of terms "S" and "G" in thephases of interphase.
- The term “S” means SYNTHESIS phase (When DNA synthesis occurs) and the term “G”
means GAP phase (gap between phases).
4. For an animal cell in metaphaseof mitosis, list the structures that are present.
- Chromosomes, centrosome, astral microtubule, kinetochore, kinetochore microtubule,
spindle fibres, cytoplasm, organelles and cellmembrane.
5. Describe the events that occur from G1 interphase to prophase of mitosis in the nucleus and in the cytoplasm.
6. During prometaphase, briefly describe the changes which involvemicrotubules. Identify the two types of microtubules and discuss their functions. List the other structures that are present.
7. Disjunctional segregation at anaphase depends upon structural components inthe cell. List them.
8. Describe mitotic anaphase. State the mechanism that moves the once-joined sister chromatids (now each
considered chromosomes) to opposite poles. Your answer should refer tostructural proteins (how they
function) and to enzyme activities and motor molecules.
9. Distinguish between the terms "centrosomes" and "centromeres" and “centrioles”..
10. Distinguish betweencleavage furrow formation and cell plate formation.
11. As discussed in lecture, microtubules depolymerize during anaphase. Describe the experiment that supports
the hypothesis of microtubuledepolymerization.
12. What is "MPF"?
13. Identify the components of MPF. Which component present in MPF varies in concentration in a cell?
2
14. List the enzymes that are involved in regulating the...
