Abstract
Eggs ranged from 1.10 to 1.17 mm in
diameter and contained a single oildroplet 0.300.35 mm in diameter. Hatching occurred after 146 h
at 10-13°C and larvae survived for 4 days.
Comparison with other Seriolella species shows
features allowing distinction of S. punctata eggs and
larvae.

Current Fisheries Research Division stock size
assessment studies on the ichthyoplankton of the
west coast of the South Island require accurate
descriptions of the eggs andlarvae of the fish species
spawning in the area. We present here a description
of the egg and larval development of the silver
warehou.
MATERIALS AND METHODS

On 9 September 1979 a large catch containing many
running ripe male and female silver warehou was
trawled by the Soviet research vessel Babuskina
west of the Mernoo Bank (43°50'S, 174°37'E). Eggs
were stripped from 4 females into a 1-Lglass jar
containing 200 ml of sea water. Milt from 3 ripe
